Jschool graduate Aba Saad has done us proud by winning Fairfax Regional Media’s Cadet of the Year award. Well done Aba!

Cadet awarded for ‘adventure of spirit’

THE Daily Liberal has some news of its own this week, with cadet journalist Abanob Saad receiving a major industry award when he was announced as the 2013 Pat Riggs Cadet of the Year.

The award is open to all Fairfax Regional Media cadet journalists in NSW and Queensland and is a memorial to the late Pat Riggs, former editor of the Macleay Argus at Kempsey.

The award is given each year to a cadet who demonstrates outstanding journalistic skills as well as strong relationships within the local community.

Kempsey-based Terry Hunter OAM has been involved with the award since its beginning 14 years ago and described Mr Saad’s nomination as outstanding.

“He showed adventure of spirit and that he was outgoing with the community,” he said.

“It was one of the most outstanding nominations I’ve seen in 14 years.”

When told of his success Mr Saad said he was completely surprised and amazed by the honour. He said while honoured to receive the award it was not something he expected as he did not become a journalist for the kudos.

“I just want to tell people’s stories.

“The community aspect of my job is my most favourite part of the job,” he said.

“To make a difference in people’s lives is heartwarming.”

The Daily Liberal’s managing editor Brian O’Flaherty, said Mr Saad joined the newspaper in 2011 and had demonstrated a commitment to journalism and telling people’s stories beyond expectations.

“He can relate to anyone and is determined to do the best job possible,” Mr O’Flaherty said.

“He loves talking with people and being involved with the community.

“He has excelled and it is no surprise that he won a much-deserved award and recognition.”

Mr Saad will receive a trophy and a cheque for $1500 for the award.
