Jschool students gain real world experience in Telegraph newsroom

Jschool students had a ‘baptism of fire’ during recent internships with the Daily Telegraph in Sydney.

Robert Farnan earned a stack of bylines with work on breaking news stories including the Bourke Street terror attack in Melbourne, a shark attack victim’s story and a rock fisherman’s survival. Darren White covered the NSW Australian of the Year (Kurt Fearnley) together with crime and social trends stories.

As well as getting a run in the print edition, each student now has bylines on www.dailytelegraph.com.au (paywall), adding to their portfolios of publications.

Both students said how grateful they were for the opportunity to intern at the state’s biggest daily newspaper and how much they learnt from the experience. “You can’t beat being out on the street chasing a story,” Darren wrote in his internship report. Robert said it was a “fast-paced, energetic opportunity which has steeled me for a career in journalism”.
