Jschool is an intensive hands-on experience in action. We get out there and visit parliament, council meetings, law courts and newspapers, and that level of involvement has helped my progress immeasurably.

It is such a challenge and a real hands-on course. The journalists I worked with during my work experience at a major Queensland daily were very surprised with the knowledge I had and how quickly I picked things up. You are never bored, because of all the outings and excursions. I will definitely be going into my job next year with a lot of confidence.

Jschool is jam-packed with activity — every day saw something new thrown at us! We were never bored. I have met so many interesting people during this course and the teaching is incredible. I didn’t believe there were teachers/lecturers out there who cared about how well their students performed, but Jschool proved me wrong.

I had worked for four years before deciding to change careers and become a journalist; Jschool was the perfect way to do this. There are no exams or essays to write — instead we write article after article until it becomes second nature. The small class size is a blessing and a curse — you get more access to the professor than you would in any other institution but he also knows when you are slacking off! It’s a rounded journalism education — we have visited (and then, of course, written articles about) state parliament, the courts and the council. We also learn shorthand and, best of all, have the opportunity to do several internships during the year. The internships are the real test, and the skills we learnt in the course meant I was able to write articles that were printed in the newspapers from the very first day I arrived.

After returning to study after five years in the workforce I was glad to find Jschool’s curriculum so broad and inclusive. The course offered practical lectures in a relaxed environment, informative excursions and job-specific assignments to develop the journalistic skills I enrolled to learn about. The fact it also touched on a wide-ranging number of interesting subjects with no direct relation to journalism made it all the more appealing.

Jschool has helped me find my true career path of becoming a journalist. The course is very hands-on and exciting. It is very intensive and practical — you learn the correct way to be a journalist. You ‘hit the ground running’ with site visits, court and council reporting, press conferences, interviewing and internships with various news publications. I fully recommend the course to anyone committed to becoming a journalist.

Jschool has provided me with the practical skills needed for a career in journalism, as well as the opportunity to apply these skills in a real newsroom environment. The best thing about this course is the fact that it’s a well-developed program: every aspect of your learning has a purpose for future working environments (compared to university, where a lot of content feels like “padding”. Jschool offered broad and interesting content that the journalism industry expects of its journalists. It is also immensely flexible.

I liked the workshops; the variety of assignments; the material; the depth of knowledge the trainers have and their personal experiences shared – excellent; the interaction on the forum with other students; the lecturers were and are very approachable and accessible.

The course is well presented and easy to follow. I really enjoy doing the assessments, but they can be very time-consuming. It’s also really good that we can learn to apply our skills in the real world as often as we like by interviewing people and writing articles.
